Rosamund Pike Was Asked To Take Off Her Clothes For A James Bond Audition
It's been a fascinating year for the entertainment world, as a seismic shift in conversation seems to be happening in the business. Following the explosive accusations made against Harvey Weinstein, the dam broke, and women began sharing stories of sexual misconduct, harassment, and inequality in both show business and beyond. The #MeToo movement has inspired plenty of celebs to share their stories, and that includes Gone Girl actress Rosamund Pike. Pike first burst into the scene as Bond girl Miranda Frost in Die Another Day, but it turns out that her audition was majorly uncomfortable. Namely, she was asked to take her clothes off for a self-tape. As Pike recently told it,
My first audition was for a Bond film and I remember them saying I was to drop my dress and appear in my underwear. On the day, I don't know how I got the resolve and strength of mind, but I just thought 'Actually sod that, if they're gonna see me in my underwear, they better give me the job.' So, I thought, 'There's no way I'm going to take off a dress in the audition for this tape to be sent around Los Angeles and to be judged on that.
Well, that's certainly one way to get a job. Bond girls have been sex symbols since Dr. No's Honey Ryder, a tradition that has continued through the most recent installments in the James Bond franchise. And while Pike seemed comfortable disrobing on set in the context of a character (she did so covered in blood for Gone Girl), being judged solely on her appearance in an audition was something she just wasn't comfortable doing.
Rosamund Pike's comments in an Audible Session (via THR) is just the latest story of women being put in uncomfortable positions in the entertainment world. Being asked to wear less clothes for a self-tape didn't vibe with Pike's personal morals, and she ultimately refused to do it for her Die Another Day audition. The actress had serious resolve at just 21 years old, and still landed the role of Miranda Frost in the final Pierce Brosnan-lead movie.
Ultimately Miranda Frost didn't bare nearly as much as skin as Halle Berry's Jinx Johnson, who wore a famous orange bikini and ended up being the heroine of the story. The two Bond women came to blows in the film's final conflict, with Miranda getting a knife through the heart in the process.
