Ray Fisher Explains Why Cyborg's Solo Movie Hasn't Come Together Yet
Although Victor Stone, a.k.a. Cyborg, was originally best known as a longtime member of the Teen Titans, since the New 52 reboot, he has instead been depicted as one of the founding Justice League members, which the DC Extended Universe decided to keep intact for the character. Ray Fisher's Cyborg made his full debut in Justice League last year following his cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and ever since Warner Bros announced the initial slate of DCEU movies back in late 2014, a Cyborg solo movie has been in development. As for why it hasn't made any significant progress moving forward, Fisher believes it has to do with how much money it costs to fully realize Cyborg on the big screen. As Fisher explained:
There's a ton of people making those kind of decisions behind the scenes. And it would be a very, very costly movie to make because it is so CGI heavy with Cyborg, because I'm the only member of the League that's not in a practical costume. You're going to be looking at $200 million just to make it. So it's one of those things you have to take into consideration. It's a numbers game for some people at the end of the day.
Ray Fisher has a point, because while there are unique challenges to bringing each DC superhero to life in a theatrical setting, at least Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Aquaman are all wearing real costumes. Ray Fisher, on the other hand, wore a motion-capture suit during his entire time on Justice League so that the suit could be digitally created later on rather than take chances with a practical suit. The all-CGI approach results in a Cyborg who looks more closely like his comic book counterpart, but it's also a costly endeavor. So while Fisher couldn't comment specifically on the status of the Cyborg movie during his appearance at the Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in New Jersey (via Comicbook.com), at least this is a reasonable idea for why it's not one of the higher priority DCEU projects.
The end of Justice League saw Cyborg reconciling with his father, Dr. Silas Stone, adopting a look closer to the one he rocks in the comics (as seen above) and learning more about his technological abilities. Originally the Cyborg movie was supposed to be released on April 3, 2020, but a lot has changed behind-the-scenes in the DCEU in the years since, and while currently the post-Wonder Woman 1984 film lineup hasn't been disclosed to the public yet, it's been indicated that movies like Birds of Prey, The Flash and The Batman stand a better chance of arriving sooner rather than later. So it may be a while until we see Fisher's version of Cyborg back in action, but the character will still pop up in other places, which includes The First Purge's Jovian Wade playing him in DC Universe' upcoming Doom Patrol series.
