Why The Captain Marvel Movie Is So Important For Nick Fury, According To Kevin Feige
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in the midst of a game changing moment. In just a few days, Avengers: Infinity War will finally arrive in theaters, bringing together all the major characters who made up the shared universe's ten years and 18 movies. The stakes are at an all time high, as it seems like any of the MCU's biggest characters could die in the epic battle against Thanos. In addition to the merging of worlds, Captain Marvel will turn back time and bring us back to the 90s. This will include a younger and non cycloptic Nick Fury, and Marvel's Kevin Feige recently explained why the narrative will be so important to Samuel L. Jackon's signature character.
To see a version of Nick Fury who has reached a point in his career where he thought the cold war is over, you know, the best days are behind him. And certain things he encounters in this movie, it sets him on the path where that leads us to where we are 19 films later.
It looks like Captain Marvel is going to provide the deepest look into Nick Fury's experience in the world. While he's mostly been shown as the surly leader who assembled the Avengers, this will be the first real look into Fury's colorful backstory before the events of Iron Man.
Samuel L. Jackon's Nick Fury was originally the glue that tied the original Avengers together, as he introduced Tony Stark into a world much larger than his first adventure as Iron Man. While fans never took the time to wonder what his motivations were, Kevin Feige's comments to Variety tease that all become clear when Captain Marvel arrives in theaters. Audiences will be privy to how Nick Fury acted decades ago, as well as the time before he eventually met Carl Danvers.
Brie Larson's Carol Danvers has been teased as the most powerful hero in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, so the overall scope of Captain Marvel should be fascinating. Captain Marvel is a cosmic hero by nature, so Nick Fury's mind is no doubt going to blown when he comes into contact with his first hero.
Since Brie Larson was announced as the character years before her eventual solo movie would arrive, fans have been eagerly anticipating seeing the Oscar winning actress make her debut in the MCU. While Captain Marvel will arrive in 2019, many are hoping that she'll pop up sometime during the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Considering the shared universe's penchant for introducing new characters in their post-credits scenes, it certainly doesn't seem out of the question.
