Is Captain Marvel OK For Kids?

Is Captain Marvel OK For Kids?

The following contains minor spoilers for Captain Marvel**.**

Marvel's newest comic book superhero is here and you can be sure that some pretty big crowds will be checking it out this weekend. With the character being based on popular comic books, one can also be sure that fans of all ages will want to check out Captain Marvel, but does the new film really work for all ages? We'll break it down so you can make a knowledgeable decision.

First and foremost, Captain Marvel, like all other entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is rated PG-13. That shouldn't be one's only determining factor in whether the movie is ok for kids, but as the guide it's meant to be, it certainly helps set up the scene. If we look at the different elements that usually add up to create a film's rating we can see how Captain Marvel handles each one.

In the realm of sex and nudity, parents need not worry about anything in any possible way. There's nothing that even hints at such things in Captain Marvel. There isn't so much as an overtly romantic relationship in the film. The relationship between the two main leads, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), is of the "buddy cop" variety only. There isn't even a platonic kiss on the cheek that I recall.

When it comes to language, there isn't a great deal to report there either. While the PG-13 rating allows for one, non-sexual, F-bomb, the film decides against using it. There is some language that probably isn't appropriate around the average family dinner table, but if your kids have been exposed to other PG-13 movies, it's nothing they haven't heard before.

When it comes to violence, as you likely could have guessed, things are a little different. There is a lot of action that largely means people getting punched in the face or shot at. Of course, since Captain Marvel is very focused on a couple different races of space alien, most of the action is of the sci-fi ray gun variety. Captain Marvel shoots photon blasts from her and space ships fire lasers at each other.

This certainly takes the action out of the realm of reality by quite bit. There is a minor amount of blood as a result of some of the violence, but not all of it is even red, making it that much more surreal and less likely to be scary to the more impressionable.

Captain Marvel is a bit more "comic book" than some of Marvel's more recent films, everything is a bit more over the top and while the added bit of cartoonishness might not work for every viewer, kids will probably love it.

If there's any reason Captain Marvel could be a problem for kids of any age it may be a couple other elements that cause that.

First off, the story of Captain Marvel is told in a nonlinear fashion. Our lead character deals with repressed memories and flashbacks that aren't explicitly explained as such. This means the youngest kids could potentially have trouble following the story, meaning somebody older might need to be there to whisper what's going on.

Secondly, and this is a very minor issue, the movie takes place during the 1990s. As such there's a lot of jokes and references made at the expense of the decade. Jokes will be lost on younger viewers and, assuming you understand, you might need to justify the 90s after the movie is over. Good luck with that.

All kids are different and each parent will have to decide what is acceptable for each kid. Having said that, nearly all kids will probably be fine with Captain Marvel. It opens Friday

This Rotten Week: Predicting A Dogs Way Home, Replicas And The Upside Reviews

This Rotten Week: Predicting A Dogs Way Home, Replicas And The Upside Reviews

If you like dogs, cloning, and/or buddy comedies, then this is the kind of week for you. While none of the movies look all that good, the themes on hand will probably appeal to at least some moviegoers. Get ready for A Dog's Way Home, Replicas, and The Upside.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

I suppose if you like dogs or are five years old (or both) then A Dog's Way Home is right up your alley. Anyone else? Woof, I don't know. Plenty of good dog-voiceover movies have been made in the past, but this sure doesn't look like one of them. It looks as sappy and contrived as it gets. An extra good dude loses his extra amazing dog because of a complicated set of circumstances, and we must now root for the canine until he eventually finds his way home for a tearful reunion.

Director Charles Martin Smith has some experience with uplifting animal flicks, having helmed A Dolphin's Tale and its sequel (81% and 65% respectively). A Dog's Way Home seems to touch on a lot of the same notes, though I don't think it finishes as well with the critics. There just doesn't seem to be enough meat on this bone.

You know you are in a futuristic movie when the scientist/protagonist uses those computer monitors that project all around a person's face rather than a good old-fashioned keyboard and dual monitor set up. If they've got that rig, you are either dealing with Tony Stark turning his Iron Man suit into all kinds of awesome or Keanu Reeves reincarnating his dead family through the power of cloning. In this case, it's the latter, as audiences prepare for Replicas.

Frankly, this thing looks rather ridiculous. It looks like it wants to make some point about cloning while also throwing in some government intrigue and Reeves signature scowling and brooding. But I can't imagine its anything close to good based on the marketing. The trailer for Replicas has this sense of "trying too hard," and I bet the critics see it the same way.

The Upside looks like it is a paint-by-numbers dramedy about two unlikely guys, a billionaire quadriplegic and a recently released felon, who strike up a friendship after the former hires the latter to take care of him. It seems like just the kind of flick a movie studio would love while the rest of the world finds it almost completely implausible (and yes, I get it's based on a true story). Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston star as the "odd" pairing and I suppose the goal is to offer some laughs while pulling on the old heartstrings. Critics are meh on the film so far with it sitting at 55% through 11 reviews, and I don't see the score changing that much over the course of the week.

Director Neil Burger's track record has been hit or miss up until this point with Limitless (69%), Divergent (42%), The Lucky One (37%), and The Illusionist (73%). I suspect this latest lands more toward the negative side once things are all said and done.

We only had one movie last time around, and it was a miss for the Rotten Watch. Escape Room (Predicted: 34% Actual: 53%) didn't come within range of my prediction thanks to some critics enjoying the film a bit more than I thought they would. No one seemed to think it was all that good, but some were more forgiving about the premise and writing than others. It led to a few more positive reviews for a movie about a bunch of hip, young folk doing the hip young thing young people do, except this escape room has life or death consequences. It's silly, but the majority of critics saw it that way and trended just on the right side of positive.

We'll be back next time around with Glass. It's gonna be a Rotten Week!

And finally, Replicas (Predicted: 28% Actual: 9%) sucked, but way harder than I thought it would. Much like A Dog's Way Home, most critics didn't even get to screenings, as Rotten Tomatoes only has 22 reviews on record. In some ways that's even more an indictment on how bad this thing is.

Aquaman Producer Explains Time Gap Between Films

Aquaman Producer Explains Time Gap Between Films

After Aquaman exceeded all expectations and became a box office leviathan, a sequel was basically guaranteed, and given the first films success, it would be natural to assume that the sequel would be fast-tracked to theaters. But while Aquaman 2 is indeed on the way, it wont arrive in theaters until 2022, four years after the first film. Aquaman producer Peter Safran explained the reason for the gap between the films, saying:

[Hamada], myself and James Wan always shared the same philosophy, which is: you want to do it right. You don't want to do it fast. You just want to do it right.

Of all the reasons that a film will take a long time to reach theaters, this is basically the most encouraging and the one you want to hear. As Peter Safran told The Hollywood Reporter, he, director James Wan and executive producer and DC Films head Walter Hamada arent going to rush Aquaman 2. They arent concerned with delivering the film quickly, a move that could be detrimental to the final product. They are purely focused on doing it right.

There is a quote from Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto that says A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad. This is the philosophy that Peter Safran is espousing here. Aquaman just came out, so Aquaman 2 isnt technically delayed, but it was decided to give the movie plenty of time to come together and be the best movie it can be. That way, there's a better chance for it to make the kind of splash that the first film did.

However, the movie business is a business, and Aquaman made over $1 billion at the box office, so you would think that there would be pressure to hurry Aquaman 2 to theaters to capitalize on the momentum from the original. Yet, that is not the case because the producer also told THR that there was no pressure from Warner Bros. to get the sequel done faster.

DC could have rushed Aquaman 2 out after the $1.13 billion grossing original, but as far as Peter Safran is concerned, that shouldnt be the focus because the what is more important than the when. DC also has plenty of irons in the fire at the moment, and with the Atlantean now the universes crown jewel, it makes sense to protect him and not mess with the desires of the team that made the first one such a hit.

Even though we now have a long four-year wait to see Aquaman 2, that doesnt mean that we wont be returning under the sea in the DCEU before that. Peter Safran expects the Aquaman spinoff film The Trench to arrive well before Aquaman 2. That film wont have Jason Momoas Arthur Curry or Amber Heards Mera in it, but the horror-tinged spinoff will take place after Aquaman and will return audiences to one of the most exciting areas of that film.

We still dont know if James Wan will return to direct Aquaman 2 because he was only signed on for the first movie, but it is nice to see DC not making a knee-jerk decision to rush Aquaman 2 here. Four years should give the film plenty of time to churn out a great script, shoot and take all the time it needs for the ridiculous amount of visual effects work these films require.

When it arrives, it will again likely own December. There was a question of whether Aquaman 2 was avoiding a December showdown with the Avatar sequels (December really is the new summer), but it seems that the main concern was just doing the film right.

Aquaman 2 dives into theaters on December 16, 2022. Thats a long way off, so to know what you can see before then, check out our 2019 release schedule.
