John Wick 3 Filming Was Hijacked By A Thousand Ballsy Cats

So far, 2019 has been the year of the movie cat -- between Captain Marvels Goose and Church in Pet Sematary. So while the John Wick franchise has always centered on dogs, including the upcoming third chapter, felines marked their territory.

John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum director Chad Stahelski recalled a particular cat invasion during the filming of the sequel in Essaouira, Morocco. The sequence features Keanu Reeves Wick and new character Sofia (played by Halle Berry) and her pair of Belgian Malinois hound protectors fighting off a small army of assassins. Heres what happened, in Stahelskis words:

The Moroccans are not big on canines. Love a fucking cat, though. There had to be thousands. We went there in the winter when we scouted and they werent that prevalent. We were like, Theres a few cats here, well get a cat department, and were going to move all the cats out. We show up to shoot and there were literally a thousand cats, okay? And the cats have balls of steel. Theyre not afraid of anything.

The irony! The director told Entertainment Weekly that, as a result, the crew had to build massive cages to house the cat residents while they shot the scene. They also tasked themselves with feeding them, Chad Stahelski commenting that there were more felines to feed than cast and crew members put together.

Halle Berrys hounds, who she trained herself, were to be a major component of the scene in Morocco. But, as you can imagine, thousands of cats are distracting. Chad Stahelski continued with these words:

What do Belgian Malinois love to chase? Fucking cats! While Keanu Reeves is killing ten guys over there, Halle is killing ten guys over here, and [there is the] stunt guy the dogs got to focus on. You want that dog focused on what hes supposed to bite, and what hes not supposed to bite. Hit the mark, right? And theres ten cats walking around and youre going, Oh, Jesus. Oh, Jesus. Youre sitting behind the monitor going, Whats the dog looking at? Whats the dog looking at? Oh my god oh my god, hes going to bite Argh! It got a little crazy between cat-wrangling, and dog-wrangling, and people-wrangling. And youve got the studio back [in America] going, Why are you a little behind? Just get the dog to do [it]. And youre like, I dont speak dog. If I did Id be fucking rich! Anyway, that was kind of fun.

Sounds like a bit of a mess but it makes for a great story and hopefully some great content for the John Wick 3 bonus features. The crew did not expect to run into cats, of all problems on set -- especially during a scene featuring dogs, no less.

In addition to working closely with the hounds -- such as a sequence where one of the dogs jumps off her back, scales a wall and takes someone down from above -- Halle Berry also trained hard to do her own badass stunts during the movies fight scenes. The actress has the bruises to show for it because she actually broke three ribs during rehearsal. She doesnt know how it happened but considers it her "badge of honor."

Unexpected cat setbacks aside, John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum is shaping up to be a highly-anticipated release. It's already being highly praised by critics, with one reviewer deeming it an action masterpiece." The movie is expected to make $30 to $40 million during its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut for the franchise yet. John Wick hits theaters on May 17.

Macaulay Culkin Totally Watched Home Alone With His Girlfriend

Macaulay Culkin Totally Watched Home Alone With His Girlfriend

In the past we've heard how Macaulay Culkin doesn't really watch his 1990 Christmas classic Home Alone anymore. It's an understandable position; I imagine not all actors want to see themselves onscreen annually, and this is perhaps doubly so for an actor who is always recognized for a role he played as a kid. But Macaulay Culkin is willing to make exceptions, and he totally watched Home Alone with his girlfriend. As he explained:

She's flipping through the channels and she's like, 'Eh, you wanna watch it?' I'm like, 'You wanna watch Home Alone with Macaulay Culkin, don't you?' And she's like, 'Yes!'

Macaulay Culkin has clearly experienced this situation more than once as he told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, implying that it is a standard occurrence when he has a new girlfriend, especially around the holidays when Home Alone is inescapable. So naturally when watching TV together, Macaulay Culkin's boo is bound to see his younger face, and want the experience of watching the classic film with the real Kevin McCallister.

The actor knows this and he is a good sport about it. Macaulay Culkin doesn't have doesn't have the same experience with Home Alone as the rest of us; to him it was part of his life and a job, not a Christmas classic that is a staple of his childhood. But for his girlfriend, it probably was the latter and despite his general reticence to watching it, he gives the lady what she wants, as he elaborated:

I have indulged that. Most of the time I'm just muttering my lines under my breath, like, 'Keep the change you filthy animal.' Whatever gets her motor running, I guess.

Macaulay Culkin you filthy animal, all these years later and still setting booby traps (ba dum tss!). At least he's honest about it; if watching Home Alone with him is a something that strikes her fancy, that seems like an easy sacrifice to make. And while he previously wasn't interested in watching the holiday classic, the right company changed his mind.

Just so long as he doesn't accidentally turn on My Girl, lest his girlfriend, or really any person with a heart in the room, be left in a puddle when Vada starts saying of Macaulay Culkin's Thomas J. "He can't see without his glasses."

Macaulay Culkin might not be the most fun person to watch Home Alone with though, if he's muttering his lines under his breath the whole time. But if you also know all of Kevin's dialogue, it might be a uniquely enjoyable experience.

Then again, fans might want to hear Macaulay Culkin deliver the lines and make the face with enthusiasm, not under his breath. But given that he's probably recited those lines and made that face countless times, you can see how now he would only do it begrudgingly.

Home Alone is a Christmas classic that isn't going anywhere but there are plenty of new movies this year vying for their own spot on your annual holiday watch list. Check them out some of the original holiday movies you can watch on Netflix right now. And if you're looking for a gift for the special movie fan in your life, take a look at our 2018 Holiday Gift Guide.
