Dark Phoenix Had The Biggest Second Week Drop Of Any Superhero Movie

Dark Phoenix Had The Biggest Second Week Drop Of Any Superhero Movie

Dark Phoenix's problems are now the stuff of legend. It had the worst opening of the X-Men franchise, by a lot, and it stands to lose around $100 million. Director Simon Kinberg is taking responsibility for the flop, and we can add this new disappointment to the list.

Dark Phoenix just had the lowest second week drop of any superhero movie. It earned $14 million on its opening day last Friday, and $2.348 million on its second Friday. That's a drop of 83.2%, relieving DC's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and its 81% drop for the title. (Finally, some good news for BvS!)

As Forbes noted, Dark Phoenix's 83.2% drop from Friday-to-Friday was just shy of the 84% drop for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II in its second Friday. Of course, one major difference there is fans had already rushed to see the final Harry Potter movie, giving it an opening weekend of $169 million in July 2011. Dark Phoenix only had an opening weekend of $33 million.

On the list of other big movies (as opposed to indies), High School Musical 3 had a 90% drop on its second Friday, but that also happened to be Halloween night.

As of Sunday, Dark Phoenix could potentially see a full second weekend drop of around 74%. That would also be the biggest second weekend drop of any major superhero movie. (It makes Brightburn's 70.5% drop look less bad now, so that's another positive.) Then again, that's projecting from the huge second Friday drop, expecting a weekend tally of only $8.63 million. Box Office Mojo and Box Office Pro were predicting Dark Phoenix to make something around $13 million this weekend.

Dark Phoenix is the final movie in the X-Men series as we know it. Fans are hoping for good things to come in the MCU, but this was Simon Kinberg's chance to take the franchise out with a bang. This latest stab at telling The Dark Phoenix Saga was plagued with production problems, rewrites, and reshoots. But at least Kinberg is content with the final product, telling KCRW he's happy with the movie and had an "amazing time" making it. Also, some fans are defending Dark Phoenix, or at least pointing out that they liked it more than Apocalypse.

It's already been noted that, if Dark Phoenix wants to salvage this run at all, it's most likely to come from the international box office. Going into this weekend, Dark Phoenix has a total worldwide tally of $148.8 million. A full $103.7 million of that has come from the foreign box office.

Stay tuned for CinemaBlend's Sunday box office report for the ultimate weekend numbers. Father's Day 2019 weekend is meant to be a pretty slow one at the box office, despite major new releases like Men In Black International. Even with so many disappointing franchise debuts, this could be the weekend Avengers: Endgame says goodbye to the top 10.

That decline makes "Dark Phoenix" the unfortunate record holder for biggest second weekend drop ever for a superhero movie. According to IndieWire's box office expert Tom Brueggemann, "Dark Phoenix" is now destined to lose perhaps $100 million at the box office.

Paul Rudd Says His Daughter Cant Get Enough Of Drawing Ant-Man

Paul Rudd Says His Daughter Cant Get Enough Of Drawing Ant-Man

Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) is one of those Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes who does not get a whole lot of respect. He's mocked mercilessly by other characters, and The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) has proven that she's just as capable (if not more so) of kicking ass in a shrinking costume. That said, it turns out that the hero has at least one notable fan: Paul Rudd's daughter, as the actor opened up to CinemaBlend and other outlets during a visit to Ant-Man and The Wasp's set last year and explained that his daughter loves to draw the diminutive hero. Rudd explained:

My daughter who is seven, all she does is draw pictures of Ant-Man. It's the sweetest thing in the world. I have lots of pictures of Ant-Man, which she draws.

Mr. Rudd, we're going to need to see some of those adorable pictures that your daughter has drawn. You can't promise us something that cute and then not show us! No matter... Even though Ant-Man often finds himself as the butt of a joke (whether it's at the hands of someone like Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark or himself), but the wise-cracking hero has a fan in the form of Rudd's 7-year-old daughter. If that does not warm your heart, then I hate to break it to you, but you're Thanos.

If nothing else, this seems to hammer home why Paul Rudd seems like such a great actor to take on the role of Scott Lang. The way he describes his relationship with his daughter feels decidedly reminiscent of Scott's relationship with his daughter, Cassie. We're not sure if this is a case of art imitating life or life imitating art, but it's clear that the father-daughter dynamic is a big deal to Scott Lang AND Paul Rudd.

Ant-Man and The Wasp picks up after the events of Captain America: Civil War, and Scott Lang has been placed under house arrest after his liberation from The Raft prison by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). However, when an experiment conducted by Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) leads to the arrival of the villainous Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Scott is brought back into action to team up with Hope van Dyne (who has taken over from her mother as The Wasp) to take her down. In addition to the returning cast members from the original movie, Ant-Man and The Wasp will also introduce Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet van Dyne, as well as Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster a.k.a Goliath. The sequel arguably seems smaller than other recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in terms of scale, but it's clear that Scott's ability to grow and become Giant Man will become a more prominent element of his persona when the sequel kicks into high-gear. Needless to say, we can't wait.

Paul Rudd will return to his role as Scott Lang next month when Ant-Man and The Wasp hits theaters on July 6. Make sure to check the film out when it finally debuts, and for now, you can also make sure to catch Avengers: Infinity War while it's still in theaters.

Paul Rudd says that he told his daughter that she is the real Cassie and that there are nods in the move that he says are just for her. I LOVE that. On The Ant-Man and The Wasp Co-Stars. this has turned into a love fest for sure. It can't get any better than that right? He went on to say that Hannah is extremely talented and very very cool.

What Wolverine Is Most Afraid Of In Logan, According To James Mangold

What Wolverine Is Most Afraid Of In Logan, According To James Mangold

Being an almost indestructible killing machine that can recover from any injury, there probably isn't much that Wolverine is afraid of. Live for a couple hundred years, and there really isn't much that can bother you. That was one of the challenges James Mangold was facing when he co-wrote the now Oscar-nominated screenplay for the critically acclaimed Logan. It's hard to write a character-driven movie if your character is always fearless, but Mangold eventually released that Logan isn't afraid of anything mortal -- he's afraid of intimacy. Here's how Mangold cracked the code:

Given that this was Hugh Jackman's last Wolverine movie, the question I needed to answer was, 'What is Logan most frightened of?' He's not frightened of the end of the world, he might welcome it. He's not frightened of his own death, he might welcome it. He's not consumed with vengeance for a specific villain, he'd rather live life in isolation. But it dawned on me: Logan is completely phobic about intimacy.

Logan may not have gotten the Best Picture nomination that some were hoping for, but the movie did break serious ground by being the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Screenplay. Considering that most superhero films aren't exactly praised for their writing, this is a pretty major deal and it's thanks to the hard work put in by James Mangold and co-writers Scott Frank and Michael Green. The group crafted a well-paced, compelling, and character-driven script, but it wasn't without its challenges. Obviously, a movie where the main character isn't afraid of anything isn't particularly exciting to watch, so part of the job was finding what this centuries-old warrior was afraid of.

James Mangold told The Credits that because Logan was Hugh Jackman's final stint as the character, he knew he really had to push the script and go in a direction that previous Wolverine movies hadn't. I would say that he accomplished this on several levels, with an Oscar nomination as proof. Part of the challenge was finding Logan's fears and confronting them, and for Logan nothing is worse than suddenly having to be an emotional anchor for a little girl.

One of the best parts of Logan is his growing relationship with his kinda-sorta daughter, Laura. It's really compelling to watch as Logan is forcibly thrust into a family unit and must take care of both Laura and Professor Xavier. It's some really good emotional stuff that pays off in a big way. The jury's still out on if Logan will actually take the Academy Award, but it definitely deserves to.
