The Weinstein Company Is Being Sued Over Paddington 2

We just finished up an uncharacteristically good January, as some truly solid movies have debuted in the typically-lackluster month. Chief among these is Paddington 2, a family-friendly sequel to a similarly family-friendly 2015 original that has earned phenomenal reviews. Things have gone reasonably well for Paddington 2 on the fan side of things since its January 12 release, but now it looks like the business side is getting messy. Specifically, The Weinstein Company is now being sued over the film's distribution rights.

According to the report on the situation, Entertainment One Films Canada claims that The Weinstein Company owes millions of dollars following the latter's decision to pull out of its Paddington 2 distribution deal. The suit alleges that The Weinstein Company promised to give Canadian distribution rights to the company, but then opted to sell them to Warner Bros. instead.

There is a significant amount of money at stake in the suit. Per the THR report about the situation, Entertainment One Films Canada claims that The Weinstein Company has yet to pay it over $7.2 million for those distribution rights. As of right now, The Weinstein Company has not officially commented on the situation. And to think, all of this over an adorable bear with an affinity for marmalade sandwiches.

This case arguably appears to be a black eye on an otherwise very successful release for Paddington 2. The family-friendly live-action/animation hybrid movie has earned stellar reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (it still has a 100% rating several weeks after its initial debut) and the film has earned a very commendable (particularly by January standards) $193 million worldwide against a $50 million production budget.

This situation obviously isn't the only issue that has plagued The Weinstein Company in recent months. The company was already in the process of struggling financially in 2017, and then it was rocked by the industry-shaking sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein. We recently reported on the possibility that The Weinstein Company may be close to selling in order to prevent full-blown bankruptcy, and it looks like a rebrand (completely with a brand new name) may be on the horizon as well.

The Russo Brothers Confirm That Hulk's Avengers: Endgame Damage Is Permanent

A lot of things changed for a lot of our favorite heroes in Avengers: Endgame. Some heroes died, others exited the main stage in other ways. We knew the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was going to be something quite different, and now we know many of the ways those changes will manifest. However, one often overlooked Avengers is Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk, and the events of Endgame have also changed his life in a major way.

The Hulk is the one who risks his life by being the one to use the Infinity Stones to return life to the universe. The act very nearly kills him, and leaves him with one severely damaged arm. Endgame directors the Russo brothers have now confirmed that Hulk won't simply heal from this damage, instead, it's permanent damage that Bruce Banner will have to deal with going forward. According to Joe Russo...

Hes lost an arm. He lost Natasha. Thats not coming back. Hes damaged himself. I dont know. Its interesting. Thats permanent damage, the same way that it was permanent damage with Thanos. Its irreversible damage. His arm, if you noticed, is a lot skinnier. Its blackened. So, he loses a lot of strength there.

An Incredible Hulk who has lost a lot of strength is certainly a very different Incredible Hulk. Mark Ruffalo's character is one who we expect will continue forward in the MCU, but this change will go with him.

Joe Russo admits to ComicBook.com there's really no such thing as truly "permanent" when it comes to this sort of thing in Marvel movies. In a world of magic and super advanced science, the possibility for Hulk being healed is certainly there, but the point is that Hulk will need to be actively healed in some way for this damage to go away, he's not simply going to heal if he puts some ointment on it and wraps it in a cast. Also, as Joe Russo puts it, for him the damage is permenant, because it's somebody else's job to figure out what happens next...

Maybe someone helps him repair that. Maybe someone gives him a new arm. I have no idea where that character goes from here. The nice thing is we didnt have to pay attention to where it goes after this, we just try to tell a satisfying ending.

Joe Russo draws something of a parallel between Hulk's arm an Natasha Romanov. Both are gone, seemingly forever. One has left physical scars, the other has certainly done some emotional damage. While the relationship between Bruce Banner and Black Widow was never fully explored on screen, it was made clear that there were feelings there, and Bruce will now have to deal with them without her.

Of course, how the future of the MCU will deal with Hulk is a significant question on its own. Hulk has only been a supporting players in the various Avengers movies and Thor: Ragnarok since Mark Ruffalo took on the role. The only Hulk solo movie in the franchise was the second MCU movie made, and there has been no indication that a Ruffalo-led Hulk movie is even being considered. Marvel Studios shares the film right to the character with Universal, so making a Hulk focused movie is a bit tougher than it is with other characters.

Since the future of Avengers movies is also a big question mark, we have basically no idea wen we'll see Hulk again, or how this change in the character could manifest if and when we do.

Hopefully, we will see more of Mark Ruffalo and the Incredible Hulk very soon. Hopefully Marvel will give us a hint when that might be soon, since the entire future of the MCU is a big black box right now

A Deadpool 2 Extended Cut Is Coming, Heres What To Expect

Deadpool 2 is different from most superhero sequels in many ways -- and one example is runtime. While there are many big blockbusters that are happy to go over 135 minutes nowadays, the R-rated follow-up clocks in under two hours long -- largely thanks to its modest scale and tight narrative. As is, it's a great movie and ton of fun, but those of you wishing it could have been longer will soon get a special treat. I can confirm that a Deadpool 2 Extended Cut is currently in the works, courtesy of my recent interview with director David Leitch:

There's an extended cut. And I think that they may want to spin that out as a special thing, but right now I'm sort of... we're taking our time, and it's going back to the 'director cut,' and then sort of collaborating with Ryan [Reynolds], Rhett [Reese], and Paul [Wernick], and making sure we're all getting all the jokes we want - to have it be fun and our sort of fun collaboration.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with David Leitch last week during the Deadpool 2 junket in New York. We were discussing the longest assembled cut of the film, and it was as part of that discussion that he revealed the new edit that is currently in the works. And while it sounds like the precise distribution method has not yet been decided, at the very least it should get a Blu-ray release.

The "Director Cut" that David Leitch is referring to in the above quote is an early version of the film that the filmmaker put together shortly after production to show Ryan Reynolds and the other producers how everything was cutting together. Surprisingly, the assembly clocked in at only two hours and 12 minutes long -- the length you can expect for the Deadpool 2 Extended Cut -- which actually came as a total surprise to the film's star. Said Leitch,

It was funny, because we shot... it was like an 83 day shoot, and it was a lot of material. But I kept telling the studio, and I kept telling Ryan, I'm like, 'No, the director's cut going to come in at like 2:12.' And he's like, 'No way!' And I'm like, 'It is! It's going to come in at 2:12. I want to make it tight. I want you guys to get a really tight first look at the film. I don't think it needs to be bloated and I'm not that type of filmmaker.'

David Leitch described "nips and tucks" that were done that wound up cutting 12 minutes from the assembly -- but also offered a taste of some sequences that the Deadpool 2 Extended Cut will be bringing back for fans. For example, there will be a montage of the titular anti-hero trying a wide variety of suicide methods after being devastated by the death of Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). But that's not all, as the director says the alternate version of the film will use a lot of lines that were not included in the theatrical edition:

The suicide scene is in there, and there's a scene in the mansion in the kitchen over breakfast. There's some extra Domino stuff. There's a lot of fun little bits, and then a lot of alts! We're looking for every place we can put an alt.

My conversation with David Leitch then turned to a discussion about bringing the Juggernaut to life, but I was fortunately able to get the skinny on the extended X-Mansion scene from writers/producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. For starters, there was a bit that has a payoff that's still included in the theatrical cut of Deadpool 2, and it's pretty disgusting:

Rhett Reese: We had a scene in the kitchen in the X Mansion, which is one of our favorites... You see Deadpool say 'ejaculated into a soap dispenser a hero,' and Colossus goes (smells fingers). There's an earlier scene where they're in the kitchen and Colossus is trying to get the soap dispenser to work. And he's like, 'This won't work.' And Deadpool's like, 'Just give it a few extra pumps. I just filled it.'Paul Wernick: It would have made that joke so much funnier.Rhett Reese: It would have been better. But it still works. People still get it because they see Colossus [sniff his fingers].Paul Wernick: I'm telling you, when we were coming up with that joke we were all in L.A. at Ryan's hotel where he was staying, and we were kicking around that joke, and my God we were laughing so hard. That's the sign that we're like, 'Okay, we just stumbled onto something.

Not everything about the sequence was as disgusting as ejaculating into a soap dispenser, however. Deadpool was actually going to start acting like a respectable member of the X-Men and start following Colossus' rules -- starting with labeling all of his own food:

Rhett Reese: The kitchen scene was fun. He's labeling stuff in the refrigerator as he was told to do. And so he's putting Velcro labels on, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead is not buying his go-straight routine. She's like, 'I see through you, you're still full of shit.' It was fun.Paul Wernick: It was just playing around with this idea that Deadpool is just this little kid. He's just a little kid at heart as we all are.

As alluded to earlier, the exact distribution and schedule details for this new version of Deadpool 2 are currently unknown. The film will surely have a home video release date in the early fall, and it's possible that the Extended Cut will be included. That being said, it doesn't sound like theatrical distribution is totally off the table, and there also exists the possibility that 20th Century Fox will give it its own special Blu-ray release (a la the Rogue Cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past). Time will tell.

How Danai Gurira Juggles Her Marvel Roles With The Walking Dead

Needless to say, the following contains spoilers for Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. Stop reading now if you'd like to go into the upcoming blockbuster knowing next to nothing.

Some actors are lucky enough to be juggling multiple film franchises, whether its Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy) or Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes). Danai Gurira currently holds down an important role in the MCU (Black Panther) and on AMC TV (The Walking Dead). When CinemaBlend took a trip to Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War set, we spoke with Gurira about balancing the workload of an extremely popular television drama, as well as the needs of Marvel Studios. She opened up and said the fact that they both shoot in Georgia has been extremely beneficial. In addition, Gurira explained:

It also helps that one needs me bald and the other one needs me wigged, so it really works out. They're really happy with that. 'Yeah, keep it bald. It'll make the wig go on easier.' If I grow a 'fro, they wouldn't like it so much. It's a good balance. They're both such awesome people on either side. They want each other's stories told.

Danai Gurira has been lucky that her two main Marvel Studios movies -- Ryan Coogler's Black Panther and the Russo Brothers' Avengers: Infinity War -- filmed largely in Atlanta, at Pinewood Studios or surrounding areas. This allowed the actress to play both Okoye, proud member of T'Challa's Dora Milaje in Coogler's movie. And she was able to keep playing Michonne on The Walking Dead. Michonne is a pivotal character on AMC's horror-drama, a member of Rick's core group of survivors who has developed a romantic relationship with the hero over time.
