One Big Moment In The Avengers: Infinity War Trailer That's Not In The Movie

One Big Moment In The Avengers: Infinity War Trailer That's Not In The Movie

Warning: spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War are in play. So if you're not current on the great big Gauntlet chase, come back after you've indulged in the latest MCU adventure.

Trailers are everything to a movie. They set the expectation for what we're about to see, hype up certain moments we're supposed to look forward to seeing, and, above all, they're supposed to make us purchase a ticket to see the latest and greatest at the movies. So naturally, Avengers: Infinity War had a bunch of those killer moments in its trailer, and chiefly among them is the moment that closed the first big trailer for the film. A moment where several of our heroes, including Captain America, Black Panther, Black Widow, and The Hulk all charge towards the camera; as you'll clearly see below.

Now the only problem with this moment is that, unfortunately, it's nowhere to be seen in Avengers: Infinity War. And while trailers tend to use scenes and moments cut from the final product they're promoting, this is a particularly interesting misdirection.

Ultimately, in the story of Avengers: Infinity War, we only get The Hulk at the beginning of the film, as he fights Thanos onboard the ship he departed upon at the end of Thor: Ragnarok. So with the fear of the Mad Titan instilled in him, The Hulk is actually too scared to show up for the rest of the movie, thus leaving Bruce Banner struggling to coax him out. Despite his best efforts, the big green rage monster doesn't return fully in the film, leaving Bruce Banner to have to use the Hulkbuster armor during the battle of Wakanda.

Even with that stipulation in play, this entire moment isn't in Avengers: Infinity War at all. So including it in the trailer is already misleading enough, as it's hyping the audience for a scene that never shows up in the over two and a half hour running time. To add onto the lies, we're teased that there's a moment where The Hulk will return to save the day, which is a big part of Bruce Banner's arc in this new Avengers film. While the arc that actually takes place is pretty exciting, for people who are die-hard fans of The Hulk, this is going to be more than a little disappointing.

Changing a moment slightly to advertise a movie is a standard business practice. Go back to that trailer, and listen to Thanos's dialogue; you'll see that the line about fun while balancing the universe isn't in the final film. That's an omission that doesn't break the movie, or mislead the audience into thinking that a certain moment or character that's isn't present in the film will show up. But including an entire character, whose whole plot arc is about their super-powered alter ego having stage fright, is extremely dishonest.

To fully illustrate this point, imagine the following scenario. You're looking forward to the new Die Hard movie, and the trailer has a lot of exciting explosions, one-liners, and the return of Lucy McClane, running into a burning building, gun in hand, alongside her dad. That trailer has you jazzed to see Mary Elizabeth Winstead theoretically kick some ass, doesn't it? Enough that when you show up to the theater, and see that she dies in said fire without ever getting a gun in her hand, you're going to be pretty upset. You paid the movie ticket for the latest Die Hard movie, thinking Lucy was going to get her day in the sun, only to totally see her bite the big one in the first 10 minutes.

As you'll see in the pre-release and post-release coverage we've given to Avengers: Infinity War, it's not like we hate the movie for pulling a fast one with The Hulk. But if we don't draw attention to this sort of behavior, and call out everyone that pulls off this sort of omission, then we leave a dangerous precedent in place for future film-makers to take advantage of. And in a world where someone actually sued a movie company because a movie trailer mislead them with actual footage from the film, that's a precedent that could be costly to major film studios who aren't careful with their promotional muscles.

Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now, with a lot of the moments shown in the trailers still included in the film. But there's plenty of time between now and Ant-Man and The Wasp's release on July 6th, so don't forget to watch tomorrow's trailer and take notes of moments you think might disappear by time it's in theaters.

How Alita: Battle Angel Brought Its Crazy Motorball Sequence To Life

How Alita: Battle Angel Brought Its Crazy Motorball Sequence To Life

Robert Rodriguezs Alita: Battle Angel is a very faithful adaptation of its beloved source material, but it does make one notable change. Borrowing an element that isnt introduced in the manga until closer to the middle of the series, the film introduces audiences to the violent sport known as motorball: a deadly, dangerous game played by cyborgs at high speeds.

Its an interesting addition not only from a visual effects perspective, but also in the movies storytelling and I felt compelled to ask about it when I interviewed Robert Rodriguez, star Rosa Salazar, and producer Jon Landau during the movies domestic press day in Los Angeles earlier this month.

Sitting down with the trio in a recreation of one of the sets from the movie, my first question was about the introduction of motorball to Alita: Battle Angel and the challenges of bring it to life and Robert Rodriguez opened by saying that there was a mix of positives and negatives within the execution. In the case of the former, for example, the film doesnt actually feature any full scenes of the sport being played, so that took a bit of narrative weight off their shoulders and allowed the production to have a bit more fun with it:

It wasn't in the two books that [James Cameron] was adapting into the script, but he pulled it out of book three and four. He said, 'I think fans of the manga would be really upset if they got an Alita movie and there's no motorball. And he found a really cool way to use it where they're not even playing the game; they're all just trying to kill her - which I thought was awesome because then it's more character driven.

Writing the script, James Cameron handed Robert Rodriguez a pretty handy shortcut that avoided a sequence dedicated to explaining the rules of motorball but that was just one item taken off of a still very full plate. Just because there was no need for an exposition dump (one that notably didnt actually exist in the manga either) didnt mean that the filmmakers didnt have to still figure out the mechanics of the sport, and that process created its own special issues.

As an example, the director explained how even figuring out how fast the characters needed to go was a process with hurdles. While the Alita: Battle Angel source material did provide some guidance, the practicalities of filmmaking required a few alterations in the physics department, which then themselves required further alterations in other areas. Rodriguez explained,

I did a bunch of speed tests really early on, just with some animatics in Austin, trying to figure out how fast they really needed to be going so that it would feel fast because it was always described as being like a 100 mph. Which, you know, when you put it on a track, because the track doesn't have a lot of discernible visuals, it just didn't seem fast enough. So it's more like 400 mph just to get it, and that means right away we're out of track, so we had to just keep elongating the track. There's a lot of cheats in there to get the feeling, this breathless feeling of the track.

Of course, just because Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron didnt fully outline the rules of motorball in the making of Alita: Battle Angel doesnt mean that theyve cast the task aside permanently. While the making of this movie didnt make that job a requirement, Rodriguez added that its something that would certainly be done for a sequel:

Because the story point was just that they were trying to kill her. We can just throw that out the door and go, 'Okay. As long as it feels like there's some sport being played, we don't really have to figure it out in this movie. We will eventually!

As for the performance perspective, the majority of the professional motorball sequence is primarily brought to life with pure visual effects but that doesnt mean that Rosa Salazar was totally sidelined for the experience. Obviously she wasnt strapped to any kind of machine that would whip her around at 400 mph, but there were particular parts in the making where her talents were required.

Speaking to her work on the motorball scene, Rosa Salazar noted that the work was a bit more fractured, but could highlight the moments her involvement (primarily involving close-ups and dialogue) with Robert Rodriguez chiming in to add an extra detail.

Rosa Salazar: Here's the thing - there were specific moments during all of those motorball battles that we actually shot separately. When he's trying to push my head into the ground and I break... a couple of different moments. Obviously right before I bust through the glass at the starting line, 'Take it easy on me, guys.' Taking off. All of those things were shot.Robert Rodriguez: We had a start line where all of them were together and she could actually interact with everybody. Even though all their bodies were going to be replaced, we still had to photograph all of their faces.

You can watch Robert Rodriguez and Rosa Salazar discuss the process of bringing the motorball sequence to life by clicking play on the video below:

If youre now totally pumped to see this insane action on the big screen, the good news is that you can do it right now. Alita: Battle Angel which has Rosa Salazar joined by an outstanding cast including Jennifer Connelly, Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, and more is now playing in theaters everywhere. Well have plenty more about the film coming your way in the next few days as it fights its box office competition during the Valentines Day weekend, and be on the lookout for more behind the scenes stories.

Alita: Battle Angel, directed and co-written by Robert Rodriguez off a story plan by producer James Cameron, may be getting a lot of attention for the groundbreaking processes and technology behind the creation of the title character player by Rosa Salazar, but Iron City is chock full of cyborgs of varying sizes and shapes.

Wait, Is Doctor Strange Director Scott Derrickson Doing A Hellraiser Reboot?

Wait, Is Doctor Strange Director Scott Derrickson Doing A Hellraiser Reboot?

It's normal nowadays for a studio to resurrect old, familiar franchises in order to give them a second life up on the big screen. We saw an example of that last year with the new Halloween film, which sparked new life into the horror franchise. It looks like another horror icon may be getting a new film soon. Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson tweeted an image teasing that he might be directing a new Hellraiser movie.

Fitting right in with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and other movie monsters, Hellraiser is a series of horror films that centers around a creature named Pinhead. The storylines of the films follow a puzzle box that is a gate to the hell-like dimension of the Cenobites, an order of formerly human monsters who harvest souls to torture in sadomasochistic experiments. Pinhead is the leader of the Cenobites and the face of the franchise.

The first film was released in 1987 and spawned nine sequels, the most recent of which was released last year. However, despite the longevity of the franchise, the films vary in quality and, after the fourth film, every sequel was released straight-to-home video. Scott Derrickson himself directed the first film to be released direct-to-video -- Hellraiser: Inferno, which came out in 2000.

However, it sounds like the franchise could be making a comeback. Earlier this year, it was reported that Blumhouse -- the extremely successful horror film studio -- was interested in making a new Hellraiser film. Now we've got this tweet from Scott Derrickson seemingly teasing his involvement in said film.

Scott Derrickson didn't make any sort of announcement to go with the social media post, but it's doubtful he would just randomly share the picture if he didn't have something in the works. While Derrickson is maybe best known as the director of Doctor Strange, he's directed plenty of horror films like Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Scott Derrickson knows how to get scary and he seems like a good fit to continue with the Hellraiser franchise. Plus, I'm sure that fans of the series are eager to see a real high-quality theatrical release.

Assuming that Scott Derrickson is directing a new Hellraiser, one would assume that this would come after Doctor Strange 2. While not officially confirmed, it's long been rumored that Doctor Strange 2 is in the works with Derrickson back in the director's chair. Without either film actually being confirmed, it's tough to guess what Derrickson's schedule would look like.

Either way, a new Helllraiser might be in-bound. Get a blast from the past with the trailer for the very first film in the series.

Make sure to stick with CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated on all the latest movie news as soon as it becomes available to us. For everything that is definitely coming to theaters this year, be sure to check out our handy 2019 movie release guide.
