A Lingering Marvel Plot Point The Shang-Chi Movie Could Address

Although Marvel Studios hasn't officially unveiled its lineup of Phase 4 movies just yet outside of Spider-Man: Far From Home (it's hard to say if there will be an event presenting this information similar to what was done for Phase 3 in 2014), slowly but surely, we're learning what will comprise this slate. The latest addition to the bunch is Shang-Chi, starring the same-named martial arts hero who's been around the Marvel Comics universe for decades. Wonder Woman 1984's David Callaham is writing Shang-Chi, and though it will be a while until we learn what this story is about, the movie could be a good opportunity to address an MCU plot thread that's been lingering for several years: the existence of The Mandarin.

Since being introduced in 1964's Tales of Suspense #50, The Mandarin has been one of Iron Man's greatest comic book enemies, using his naturally impressive intellect, martial arts skills and the ten aliens rings he found (each of which have their own special ability) to terrorize the Armored Avenger and the entire world. In 2013, Iron Man 3 finally adapted The Mandarin for the big screen. Well, sort of.

Within the MCU, The Mandarin was initially presented as the leader of The Ten Rings terrorist organization, but as it turned out, this individual was actually just a drunken actor named Trevor Slattery, who was hired by Iron Man 3's real villain, AIM head Aldrich Killian, to be the public proxy distracting the public while Killian carried out his illegal activities behind the scenes. Towards the end of Iron Man 3, Killian claimed he was the true Mandarin, but other than having some dragon tattoos, he hardly felt like a proper adaptation of the character.

Then came the All Hail the King, the Marvel One-Shot depicting Trevor Slattery being interviewed by documentarian Jackson Norriss about his past and how he became affiliated with Aldrich Killian. At the very end, Norriss explained that Killian had based The Mandarin persona on an actual historical figure. Revealing himself to be a Ten Rings member, Norriss held Trevor at gunpoint and told the idiotic performer that he was taking him to see the real Mandarin, who was insulted that Slattery and Killian made a mockery of his name.

And that's it. Four years have passed since All Hail the King, and there hasn't been any mention of The Mandarin since. There aren't any more Iron Man movies on the way, and it's been indicated that Robert Downey Jr. might be leaving the MCU after Avengers: Endgame. So it's unlikely that we'll ever get an Iron Man/Mandarin showdown within this universe, but as a consolation prize, The Mandarin could easily fill in as Shang-Chi's arch-nemesis on the big screen.

Within the Marvel Comics continuity, Shang-Chi was initially presented as the son of Fu Manchu, based off the same-named literary character. When Shang-Chi discovered that his father was an international criminal, he rebelled against his father, and many of Shang-Chi's earliest adventures followed him battling his father's minions. Due to licensing issues over characters and concepts from the Fu Manchu books, Marvel eventually had to stop calling him that, and years later, it was revealed that this individual was actually an ancient Chinese sorcerer named Zheng Zu who had discovered the secret to immortality and had used Fu Manchu as an alias.

Given how the original version of Fu Manchu is considered to be a negative stereotype, you can be sure that the Shang-Chi movie will not be using that name in any way. It's possible that the project could still adapt the Zheng Zu aspect of the character, particularly since Doctor Strange opened the door to magic in the MCU However, if Shang-Chi wants to pit its eponymous protagonist against a more grounded threat, The Mandarin would be the better candidate since he's already established.

Admittedly, in his earliest comic book years, The Mandarin had some Fu Manchu-like qualities, but those have thankfully been toned down in modern years, and with the proper legwork, the real Mandarin can be shown in the MCU as a man of Asian descent without coming across as a stereotype. Beyond that, Shang-Chi could certainly use The Mandarin to substitute for Fu Manchu/Zheng Zu as the main protagonist's father, but frankly, it's more interesting to imagine the MCU's Mandarin as a target that Shang-Chi, as a special operative, has to neutralize.

It's hard to say whether the MCU's Mandarin has indeed been alive for possibly thousands of years or if that's just a myth and Mandarin is really a title that's been passed down over generations, but either way, this is a powerful man. He's in charge of one of the world's most notorious terrorist organizations, which is already enough incentive for the government agencies around the world to want to stop him once they learn of his existence.

But Earth in the MCU's modern era has been exposed to a lot of strange and unusual forces, extraterrestrial arguably the most prominent. This might not have been possible to pull off when Iron Man came out, but a decade later, it's easy enough to imagine that this Mandarin came across alien technology sometime after the events of All Hail the King, whether it's literally through ten rings or through other tools. Who knows, since Captain Marvel is showing some of Earth's secret history with aliens, maybe Mandarin has had this alien technology for a lot longer, but he didn't know how to properly utilize it.

In any case, it would be cool to see Shang-Chi as the secret agent (possibly working for MI-6, like in the comics) who's been tasked to find and stop The Mandarin before the villain can use this alien technology to carry out The Ten Rings' most devastating attack yet. There would still be some fantastical elements that we come to expect from the MCU, but this story would still be grounded enough that it wouldn't take attention away from seeing Shang-Chi's martial arts skills in action. Alternatively, the Shang-Chi movie could take a magical vs. mystical approach and show how Shang-Chi's mastering his chi, which allows him to pull off physical feats a normal athlete couldn't, compares to power from another world.

The MCU has had a lot on its plate over the decade, not the least of which has been building up to Thanos collecting all six Infinity Stones and then unleashing their power. So it is understandable that there simply hasn't been enough time to show the true Mandarin, but that doesn't mean he needs to keep gathering dust. Having him confront Iron Man appears to be out of the picture, but through Shang-Chi, The Mandarin could be put to good use and finally join the ranks of classic Marvel villains who've had the privilege of appearing in live action.

Shang-Chi is still in early development, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing updates on how the movie is progressing. Don't forget to also look through our Marvel movies guide to learn what else the MCU will be releasing in the coming years.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Ant-Man And The Wasp And The First Purge Reviews

With June now being over we've reached the halfway point in 2018, and thus far there's been no bigger success than Marvel Studios. Both Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War were monster hits when they hit theaters, and now the comic book movie franchise is ready to launch another blockbuster - though it will be going toe-to-toe with one of the biggest horror series going. Get ready for Ant-Man and the Wasp and The First Purge.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

A decade or so ago it would have been kind of ridiculous to imagine an Ant-Man movie let alone a sequel - but that's just the world that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has created. The franchise is unquestionably the biggest currently running in Hollywood, and not only are the films making money but they are earning extremely positive reviews - with Black Panther (97%), Avengers: Infinity War (83%), Thor: Ragnarok (92%) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%) being the five latest examples. The original Ant-Man did well in this regard as well, earning an 82% back in 2015, and now it looks like Peyton Reed's Ant-Man And The Wasp is going to be another critical hit.

This one picks up in between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, with Paul Rudd doing what he does best as the comedic thief-turned-hero Ant-Man, and this time around he's teaming up with Evangeline Lilly suited up as The Wasp. It looks entertaining, and the 79 reviews already in have it out-pacing the original. In short, Ant-Man And The Wasp definitely won't be the MCU's first Rotten title.

It's been five years since Ethan Hawke first hunkered down in his safe house to ride out the Purge happening in the city streets around him. In that movie we were introduced to an America that let out it's bloodlust and aggression in one big 12-hour orgy of violence once a year. The Purge was interesting, but generally just kind of meh, scoring 38% on the Tomatometer .Subsequent flicks in the franchise have been marginally better with The Purge: Anarchy (56%) and The Purge: Election Year (53%) each scoring just above the halfway mark. Now we walk the story back some, getting a taste of the The First Purge, and from the trailer, it seems we get all of the government conspiracy, creepy masks and egregious violence we can handle. After helming the first three films in the Purge series, James DeMonaco steps away from the director's chair for this one (he still wrote the screenplay), and turns the reins over to Gerard McMurray (Burning Sands - 87%). That being said, it doesn't exactly look like it's missing a beat, as The First Purge looks like more of the same from the universe that fans have grown to appreciate. I doubt it scores big with critics, and probably will dip down a bit compared to the last two installments, but at this point is mostly just working towards its core audience anyway.

Looking back at last week, I was really way off with Uncle Drew (Predicted: 18% Actual: 68%). I've been writing this column for a long time (this is actually number 409), and this is without question one of most inaccurate predictions. I thought this was a money-grabbing commercial put to film, made just as a chance to peddle some stuff and get NBA players on the big screen. I'm shocked it's basically certified fresh with more than 50 reviews in. Critics seemed generally pleased with the silliness and that the basketball players weren't total zeroes on screen. It's tough to be as wrong as I was here, as 50 percentage points off might as well be a million. I airmailed this thing bad.

Meanwhile, Sicario: Day of the Soldado (Predicted: 61% Actual: 63%) was a near bullseye, though it still doesn't take away the sting of the Uncle Drew fiasco. I suspected this sequel wouldn't come super close to the original (which was over 90%), and I was correct on that front. Critics agreed it didn't live up to the Emily Blunt-led Sicario, with Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro not putting together a story that is quite as successful. It isn't a total mess, but apparently not on the level of its predecessor.

Next time around we've got Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation and Skyscraper. It's gonna be a Rotten Week!

Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) - Rotten Tomatoes

Ant-Man and the Wasp marks the 20th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and for much of the last decade, the blockbuster saga has been a box office-conquering behemoth — a series of nested franchises in constant concentric motion, with an increasingly unwieldy narrative ambition to match its growing financial stakes.

Henry Cavill Reveals The Biggest Change Made To His Mission: Impossible Character During Filming

Henry Cavill Reveals The Biggest Change Made To His Mission: Impossible Character During Filming

For Mission: Impossible - Fallout, his sixth cinematic adventure, the biggest challenge that stood in Ethan Hunt's way was August Walker, played by Henry Cavill. While August will arguably be best remembered for his movie-sabotaging mustache, he did prove himself to be a dangerous adversary for Tom Cruise's character, but that element of his character was established by director and writer Christopher McQuarrie in the middle of principal photography. As Cavill recently told CinemaBlend:

The biggest change I would say was the threat level of Walker. He began as more of a thorn in the side of Hunt and ultimately became a formidable opponent with a driving story by the time McQ was done with him.

Having enjoyed a successful run in theaters this past summer, Mission: Impossible - Fallout is now finally arriving on home media, and CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg had the opportunity to speak with Henry Cavill about his time on the movie. Regarding how the finalized August Walker differed from how he was initially conceived, Cavill explained that August actually became more dangerous to Ethan Hunt as filming progressed, resulting in him becoming one of Ethan's greatest enemies.

While Mission: Impossible - Fallout's marketing did its best to hide August Walker's true allegiances, it certainly did a good job of setting him up as someone useful in a fight. One of the best examples of this is the bathroom fight at the Paris nightclub, where Ethan Hunt, while distrustful of August, still believed they were on the same side and worked with him to take down the man they thought was John Lark. Alas, how wrong Ethan was thinking that August was one of the good guys.

For the first half of Mission: Impossible - Fallout, the true identity of IMF's target, John Lark, remained a mystery, and August Walker was simply the Special Activities Division operative that CIA director Erica Sloane sent to shadow Ethan Hunt and help retrieve the stolen plutonium. But eventually, following a failed attempt to frame Ethan as Lark, August was revealed to be the real Lark, and he helped Solomon Lane, the main antagonist from Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, escape custody.

While the bathroom fight was cool to watch, it was in Mission: Impossible - Fallout's climax that August Walker arguably best demonstrated how formidable he was, avoiding Ethan Hunt on helicopter for a while and then throwing down in fisticuffs on top of a snowy mountain with this franchise's main protagonist. August nearly managed to outlast Ethan but in the end, he got what was coming to him: a hook-line to the face and his body being incinerated in a helicopter explosion. The villain was defeated, Solomon was handed over to MI6 and the one-third of the world's water supply wasn't contaminated by radiation. Ya, victory!

Mission: Impossible - Fallout is now available on Digital HD, but for those of you who prefer physical formats, the Blu-ray and DVD copies will hit shelves on December 4. As for if/when Mission: Impossible 7 will happen, stay tuned to CinemaBlend for any major updates.

Han Solo's Return Of The Jedi Blaster Just Sold For An Insane Amount Of Money

Han Solo's Return Of The Jedi Blaster Just Sold For An Insane Amount Of Money

The lightsaber is without a doubt the most iconic weapon to come out of Star Wars, but the blaster is a close second. When you don't have any magical powers, then the blaster is the way to go and just about every non-Jedi character has fired one off at some point. This is especially true for Han Solo, who carries around his own modified blaster that has become very popular with Star Wars fans. So popular, in fact, that the real prop used on set during the filming of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi recently sold at auction for over $500,000.

Han Solo's blaster sold for the ridiculous sum of $550,000 at an auction in Las Vegas, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The blaster was a prop used on the set of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and was once graced by the hands of Harrison Ford himself. The item was a part of a collection owned by the U.S. art director on the film, James L. Schoppe, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his work on the movie. Ripley's Believe it or Not bought Han's blaster, so one would wager that the blaster will be put on display at one point in the future for people to see it (or believe it) for themselves.

The prop was the top-selling item of the Hollywood Legends auction. However, the high-selling blaster wasn't the only Star Wars item that received some love at the auction. An Imperial Scout Trooper Blaster from the movie was also up for grabs and was sold for $90,625. Other movie items that were available, including Superman's outfit from Superman III (worn by Christopher Reeve) and a black wool dress worn by Marilyn Monroe. The Superman costume sold for a whopping $200,000, while the dress went for $50,000 to benefit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation.

It's not very surprising that Star Wars items sell for that much money, but still, $550,000 is a crap ton of money. To add some perspective, Luke's lightsaber from A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back sold for $450,000 last year, not so coincidentally, to Ripley's Believe It or Not. However, an original R2-D2 unit put both weapons to shame and sold for $3 million.

Maybe you missed out on your chance to finally spend that half a million dollars you had laying around the house, but a movie ticket is barely a fraction of that! Solo: A Star Wars Story, which tells the origin story of a young blaster who goes on adventures with some guy and his bear, is still playing in some theaters if you'd like to see the blaster in action.
